Which is the Best Wireless Xbox Headset?

With so many Xbox 360 headsets on the market, choosing one can be a difficult task, especially if you are putting lots of research into your decision. There are a large number of top brands to choose from, not just the official Microsoft headsets, but also from top brands such as Tritton, Senheiser, Turtle Beach and SteelSeries. Each one of these brands also has a wide range of models to choose from, with a huge difference in price – but does the extra cost really mean you’re getting good value for money? Is there really much difference between the cheaper headsets and the more expensive ones? One of the most popular types of Xbox 360 headset are the wireless ones, so I’ll be taking a look at some of the models that are available to help you choose the best one at your chosen price range.

Microsoft make an offcial wireless headset which neatly sits in your ear, giving you the ability to chat to other players on Xbox live. The headset will no doubt last a very long time, as most Microsoft products tend to do. The headset uses the same technology as their controllers so will be extremly reliable in connecting to your Xbox. The headset comes in at just under the £40 mark, which seems expensive when you consider the price some of the cheaper bluetooth headsets for mobile phones that essentially do the same job. One of the major drawbacks of the official xbox wirless headset is that it is only designed to deal with voice, as it only sits over one ear. You are still reliant on using your TV or other speakers to hear the in game sounds and the headset for talking and listening to other players. This will create a wierd situation for your sonically, where part of the game sound is blocked out by the headset, creating an unbalanced audio environment to play in. When so many games feature such amazing stereo and surround sound, it seems a waste to forfeit this and the amazing advantage it can give you playing online by blocking one of your ears with a headset. Of course I’m exaggerating a little bit, but the point remains the same, using this headset will compromise your gaming experience.

Fortunately, there are some alternatives to consider. If you’re still constraining yourself to a wireless headset then there are not a huge many more to choose from, with the excellent Turtle Beach X41 Headset being the main contender. Unfortunately, the step up in price is a big one, around £90 more than the official xbox one. However, the X41 provides truly amazing sound. It features an inline controller which lets you indepedently adjust the game and voice volume, and offers 7.1 dolby digital surround sound, letting you hear people sneaking up behind you, or reloading miles away. The X41 is so much better than the standard Microsoft Wireless headset, especially because it allows you to play silently, as all sound is put through your headset.

The decision to buy an wireless Xbox headset is not an easy one, and will ultimately be dictated by your wallet, however if you’re looking for the best one, the Turtle Beach 41 wins every time, but sadly comes at an expensive premium.
